The fascia board is the vertical board that runs just under the lower edge of the roof. The fascia is fixed directly to the end of the roof joists and normally sits just under the roof tiles. Guttering is attached to the fascia, to take water discharged from the roof.
The soffit board is affixed under the fascia board. Normally the soffits can be seen from street level. Soffit boards can be ventilated to allow air flow to the roof area. Condensation can form in the roof void and cause timber decay, therefore it is sensible to have adequate ventilation.
The bargeboard is the board that is used on the gable end of a house. Timber bargeboards require regular decoration and maintenance. Unfortunately, they are normally very difficult to get to, and if not maintained will look grubby after a while.
The boxend often has to be cut to various different angles and sizes to accommodate the fascia, soffit and bargeboard at the corner of the house, where there is a gable end. The boxend is used to ensure an aesthetically pleasing finish.
